I started at East Texas State University in the fall of 1969. When I arrived on campus I signed up for rush and pledged Alpha Phi Sorority. Life as a freshman was so exciting and I will never forget living in the sorority house and all the wonderful campus activities. I loved my professors and many of them remain good friends today. I learned independence, leadership, teamwork, organizational skills and had many life shaping experiences. I completed a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Home Economics, received a teaching certification, and post-graduation studied educational media and technology. While working on my masters, I worked as an assistant to the Dean of Special Education.
After graduation I worked for the Texas A&M University Extension program as a County Extension Agent for Hunt County. I then entered into the energy industry starting at Lone Star Gas Company as a Home Economist then as a natural gas buyer, in pipeline marketing for TXU, then as an officer of Atmos Energy heading public affairs and media relations.
Education was very important to my mother and it was her dream to see all of her kids in higher education. She also raised us with a sense of responsibility for giving back, leading by example by volunteering in the community and helping others for as long as I can remember. She served on the city council, chaired several of non-profits, and now at 85, she volunteers at the Police Department and many other community organizations. She has always loved music and plays a ukulele and sings in a local band playing at retirement homes and other community venues. Because of her passion for education and music, it was my dream to be able to honor her with the Jean Holt Music Endowment.
