Nelda Alderman Carter

Married George O Carter in 1958 and worked at what was then Security State Bank now Inwood Bank in Commerce. After the birth of two sons, she began her career in education in the Commerce public schools in 1966 and remained with the district in various positions until resigning in 1996. She then taught the elementary alternative certification courses at TAMU-C for three semesters. She moved to Canyon Lake, TX near New Braunfels, in 1998. Their youngest son was killed in an auto accident in 1979. She now spends her time volunteering at the Tye Preston Memorial Library in Canyon Lake.

This scholarship was established in honor of George O. Carter who taught printing in the Journalism and Graphic Arts Department from 1962 until his death in 1987. The scholarship was originally specified for a student pursuing a degree in printing. However, when the degree in printing was phased out, I transferred the scholarship to the ag department since ag was really his first love. We lived north of Commerce and he raised hay and cattle on our land and on leased land.

George O. Carter was born in Colman County TX in 1933 and graduated from Bangs, TX High School. He served in the Army during the Korean conflict and was honorably discharged in 1955. He then began pursuing higher education. He received his BS in 1959 and a Med in 1962 from what was then East Texas State College. At that time, he began teaching printing in the Journalism and Graphic Arts Department where he remained until his death.
