Dr. Don Reid Honorary Scholarship
Donald J Reid was born in Whitney, Texas in 1938. He moved to California with his family and graduated from Whittier High School in 1955.
He went to California State Polytechnic College, Pomona and graduated in 1959 with a major in General Crops Production.
Don accepted a research assistantship in the Department of Agronomy at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York and earned an M.S. degree in 1961 and a Ph.D. in 1963. Dr. Reid took a position with Shell Chemical Company, a division of Shell Oil Corporation, as a technical representative for the eight northeastern states. At that time, Shell Chemical was as basic manufacturer of agricultural insecticides and herbicides.
In 1966 he accepted a position at Michigan State University in the Department of Crop and Soils Sciences. This was a split appointment with responsibilities for Ag Extension and Applied Research.
In 1975 he moved to South Dakota State University as an Extension Specialist and Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences.
Dr. Reid returned to Texas in 1981 for a teaching position in the Department of Agricultural Sciences at East Texas State University. He continued to teach and conduct applied research until ill-health forced him to retire in 2004.
Don married Patricia Campbell in 1961. They reared two children who both completed their undergraduate degrees at E.T.S.U. Their son Dr. Mark J. Reid is an Associate Professor in the College of Education, Texas A&M University, Commerce; their daughter Celia Reid Zipperian BS, MS teaches mathematics at Commerce Middle School. Don and Pat continue to make their retirement home in Commerce, Texas.
